The statue sits high atop a building so its size can only be estimated at around three metres (10 feet). Like the building, Britannia and the lion are both carved from Portland stone. Britannia is holding, in her right hand, a spear that, judging by its colour, is probably made from copper. Normally, Britannia is depicted carrying a trident. Her left hand rests on top of an elliptical shield that has a likeness of the Union Flag carved on it. Part of Britannia's right foot and part of the lion's tail overhang the plinth.
Britannia is the female symbol of Britain and has been used since the days of the Roman Empire. In the past she was shown as more warlike than she is now, but she has always been associated with the sea that has both protected Britain and been the source of her power.
