Appearances would suggest the lighthouse is a castle but be rest assured that you in fact looking at a lighthouse. It was built in 1862 during the Victorian era by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company. They constructed the lighthouse using dressed limestone and Canadian pitch pine.
The lighthouse was in use with its beacon warning mariners until 22nd March 1985. Today the optic has been removed but is on display at the Visitor Centre nearby on the Great Orme's summit.
Encompassing living quarters for two keeper's and their families the lighthouse has a hall separating the space. Today there are several areas including The Principal Keeper's Suite, The Telegraph Room and The Lamp Room. Breakfast is served in the Victorian Dining Room.
Being located on the Great Orme gives visitors a unique chance to experience the habitat in this region. There are many walks, much wildlife to see and the town of Llandudno is only two miles away with its pubs and restaurants and Victorian seaside charm.
