On 4/10/2013 a massive landslide totally destroyed the Mine Visitor Center. Because of advance warning everything at the Visitor Center had been removed to a safe location. A new Visitor Center will probably not be available until after 2014.

Kennecott Utah's Copper property in the Oquirrh Mountains has become a safe haven for a vast array of the Great Basin ecosystem's wildlife species. As a result of ongoing reclamation and revegetation programs, many different birds and animals and be found from the Bingham Canyon Mine northward to the Tailings Impoundment and associated wetlands. Deer and Elk abound, along with field mice, squirrels, cottontail rabbits, jack rabbits, skunks, marmots, porcupines, weasels, coyotes, foxes, mountain lions and the occasional black bear. Birds of all kinds, including many raptors like Horned Owls, call the property home. At one point in 1995, HawkWatch International counted Red-tailed Hawks, Golden Eagles, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Northern Harriers, Copper's Hawks, American Kestrels, Turkey Vultures, Prairie Falcons and Furruginous Hawks in the area. Kennecott is strongly commited to living in harmony with its wild neighbors.
