On the courthouse grounds, overlooking the springs, stands Florida's first CONFEDERATE MONUMENT, erected in 1871, a white marble shaft, its apex a hand with index finger pointing skyward. ---Florida - A Guide to the Southernmost State, 1939

The main difference between when the Guide was written and today is that the human hand with its index finger pointing skyward is no longer present and I haven't been able to find any information about what happened to it. It's still a moving monument honoring the Walton County men who died during the Civil War.

A nearby historical marker reads:

Florida's First Confederate Monument

Shortly after the Civil War, the women of Walton County organized a "Ladies' Memorial Association," with Jeannet I. McKinnon as president, to erect a marble monument honoring Walton County's Confederate dead. The Association raised $250, and the monument was first erected in 1871 at Valley Church. It was moved to Euchee Anna, the county seat, and then to DeFuniak Springs when it became the county seat.

The following inscriptions are on the monument:

Obelisk:
To the memory of the Confederate Dead of Walton Co. Florida. Erected by the Ladies of the Walton County Female Memorial Association.

Base - Northwest face:
When the spirit free deserts the body as it must
What matter where the lifeless form dissolves itself again to dust.
'Twere sweet indeed to close our eyes with those we cherish near;
And wafted upwards by their sighs, soar to some calmer sphere;
But whether on the scaffold high, or in the battle van
The fittest place where man can die, is where he dies for man.
