The torii arch in Stanley Park is perfectly situated. To one side is a flat open field. Pass under the arch and the terrain suddenly changes as you enter a quiet shaded area and descend down to a rushing brook that runs through a traditional Japanese garden. You truly feel as if you've entered into a different place.
The Japanese garden in Stanley Park is the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Albert W. Ferst. It is located in a quiet, shaded area of the park. It is a large, sprawling garden that descends to a wetland, crosses a bridge, then climbs the opposite bank to end in an open field. It has a torii arch, rock gardens, a tea house, and Japanese shrines. It is planted with unusual and exotic alpine conifers, rhododendrons, azaleas, and flowering deciduous shrubs. The peak of the blooming season is May and June.
