Springfield College traces its origin back to 1885 when it was founded as the School for Christian Workers in the Winchester Square section of Springfield by Rev. David Allen Reed, to train Sunday school teachers and administrators of YMCAs. It soon changed its name to the YMCA Training School and then the International YMCA Training School. As it grew it moved its campus to its present location one mile south to the area around Watershops Pond. In 1912, it became the International YMCA College and finally, in 1954, Springfield College. All all male college at first, women were first admitted in 1931 and the first full-time women enrolled in 1951.
