The sign consists of a stoop of corn and two horseshoes carved in hardwood. The symbolism of the stoop of corn may lie in the meaning of the village name. Berden has had many spellings, among them Berdane, bearden, Byerden, Bardyne and Byrden. There is a suggestion that the name is Old English in origin and may mean Corn Valley. The horse shoes presumably refer to the blacksmiths shop that used to exist in the village.
