Halifax Bomber Crash Memorial, Tingley, West Yorkshire - Disaster Memorials on Waymarking.com

It was in the early evening of Tuesday 14th November 1944 at approx. 17.30 when a lone Halifax bomber ( LK844 ) of 51 Squadron R.A.F crashed landed near this site after the aircraft got into difficulties shortly after takeoff on a night training exercise.

Bad weather and difficulty in handling was the reason for its demise, and probably some icing played a part.

Although several buildings were damaged in the crash, including 2 bedrooms in a row of houses which had been sheared off by the nose of the aircraft, and a bungalow being struck by a fuel tank, miracously no one on the ground was injured, apart from a lttle girl who lived in one of the houses who sustained a scratched knee !

The crew were not so lucky. The aircraft was too low to bail-out, so the aircrew went down with the plane . All seven died.

In November 1989 a memorial was funded and erected by the local community, which includes seven trees set in an arc ( to represent the fallen aircrew ) with daffodils and crocuses around them, and is a beautiful sight in Spring.

Every year on Remembrance Sunday an informal wreath laying Service is held.
