As it happens you are not on the main part of the route. There are a number of spurs linking into the main route and Leeds is the start of one the spurs. From here it travels south to join the main route at Barnsley.
From its early planning stage it was always intended to make as much use of old railway and canal routes to make the path easy to use for as many people as possible. It also ties in with other national cycling routes promoted by SUSTRANS, an organisation that promotes using cycles rather than cars.
The map shows your position in relation to the whole route.
At this point the route makes use of the footpath alongside the River Aire in an area that has recently been redeveloped with new apartments, shops restaurants and a major museum.
