This pretty image of Island Park is refreshing to see on a hot summer day. It is mounted on the east wall of 112 First Avenue next to the gas station on the east edge of town. A sign reads:

“Island Park.” Artist Kayleen Wiederhoeff. Sponsored by: Founder of Rock Rapids Mural Society – Sandra Wynia and husband Curtis Wynia. Twelveth Mural.

“The Rock River and Island Park have long been known as a place to enjoy the great outdoors. Years ago, you could find area families enjoying the swinging bridge, swimming in the river, sliding down the big slides, fishing with friends or a casual walk through the park as shown in the three scenes. It’s nice to know that some of life’s simple pleasures still exist today. Spend time with family and friends at Island Park in Rock Rapids.”

The Rock Rapids Mural Society was started in 2002 as a way to preserve the town’s history. A total of 21 murals enhance the sides of buildings and highlight earlier period events and community figures. It is a wonderful way to preserve the stories of their past and share them with others every day of the year.
