These five paintings form a collection of racing murals, mounted on the north wall of the clubhouse at the Lyon County Fairgrounds. The sign beneath the mural reads:
“Rapid Speedway.” Artist Curt Nelson. Ninth Mural.
“Racing and Rock Rapids have a long history together. No matter if it was harness racing in the early days; the Chevys, Fords and Dodges of stock car racing; sprint cars, or the occasional figure-8 race, Rapid Speedway needed to be maintained. One of the most important jobs was the job of Pat Buckley. For over 25 years, he watered the track, settling the dust so fans could enjoy the race. Thanks, Pat.”
The Rock Rapids Mural Society was started in 2002 as a way to preserve the town’s history. A total of 21 murals enhance the sides of buildings and highlight earlier period events and community figures. It is a wonderful way to preserve the stories of their past and share them with others every day of the year.
