The hamlets were Beathwaite Green in the middle, part of Sizergh-Hillside parish in the north and part of Brigsteer in the south west. Beathwaite Green had a large green for overnighting animals who did not want to cross the sands of Morecambe Bay. Until the turnpike in 1820s, travellers had the choice of crossing Morecambe Bay sands when the tide was out or crossing the river Kent in Kendal if the tide was wrong. Beathwaite Green was a good overnight rest stop with pubs cheaper than Kendal.
