The Liberty was a wooden steamship built in 1889 and was being used as a passenger vessel. In 1919 the ship burned at the Grand Marais dock.
The artifacts from the ship are on display at the Cook County Historical Society and Museum. An interpretive sign is there and it appears the anchor also serves as a Christmas light base.
The sign reads:
LIBERTY was built in 1889 as a wooden side wheel steamboat. Liberty, greatly modified and serving as a passenger vessel, burned at the dock in Grand Marais on July 6, 1919. Both dock and Liberty were heavily damaged before she broke loose drifting into the harbor eventually sinking.
Anchor on loan from the Butch Schulte family.
The artifacts, museum and society sit just yards from Lake Superior and the waterfront.
