Peach Springs declined rapidly when Interstate 40 was completed in 1978. Bypassing the town by about 25 miles to the south, the Interstate starved the town of the traffic that had previously brought prosperity to the community.
In the last two years, traffic on Route 66 has inceased tremendously due to an almost cult-like following of foreign travelers devoted to discovering the historic highway. Peach Springs has been slow to take advantage of this inceased taffic and the towns of Seligman and Kingston have reaped the majority of the increased travel along this stretch of the historic route.
Peach Springs is a great place to watch trains pass along the BNSF east-west mainline through northern Arizona. During peak traffic, as many as four trains per hour may pass by just a short distance south of the main highway through town.
