Between the years of 1933 to 1937, seven CCC companies composed of World War I veterans, African American, and juvenile enrolles constructed various projects including trails, bulidings, and roads through out the Palo Duro Canyon.
The El Coronado Lodge and six other cabins of native sandstone were among these projects. These buildings were designed by Guy A. Carlander, an Amarillo architect and one of the park's leading boosters. The El Coronado Lodge was only partially completed by the CCC during their tenure.
Today, the lodge is used as Interpretive Center and Museum for the Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
