Balance Rock State Park is located in the northeast corner of Pittsfield State Forest in Lanesborough. Balance Rock is named because it contains a remarkable 25' x 15' x 10' boulder balanced upon a small stone below it. Unfortunately it seems to be a hangout area. There may be some litter in the open area and the rock is covered with graffiti. Nonetheless, it's an impressive curiosity.
The sign on the park gate indicated it closes at 4PM. If closed you can hike , it is a little over a mile to hike up the road from the gate, view the rock, and find the cache. When the gate is open, it is a very short walk. The area is very kid friendly, thought the last 150 feet to the cache are tougher going for small kids. The cache is a 30 cal ammo can. The trails here are used by dirt bikes, ATVs, horses, mountain bikes (and ?), so the cache is far enough off the trail to not draw attention. Driving directions to park gate: From Rt 7 in Lanesboro, go left on Bull Hill Rd., which turns into Naragansett Ave. Then take a right on Balance Rock Rd. Gate is maybe a mile up the road. (I didn’t measure it.)
