Martinskirche dominates Basel old town.
It first appearance in documents date from 1101/03. Martinskirche stands on the northern end of the cathedral hill and is considered the oldest parish church of Basel.
The lower parts of the tower floor and parts of the west facade date back to 1287 The polygonal choir and the north and the south facade are in outline to the late 14th Century BC. John preached here Oecolampadius, the Reformer of Basel, 1529, for the first time, "according to kind of reformed," and thus also in German.
Substantially renovated and rebuilt in 1851, the facades have been considerably altered and the interior of the rood screen was erected on a first concert stage. Even then, the church served for concerts and as various public events. Above the south door is the St. Martin´s mural by Hans Rohner since 1922 shown. The interior is equipped with numerous epitaphs.
A bell will ring every Saturday at the church opening Saturday. Traditionally the Basel Autumn Fair.
