Although it at first appears to be a Vietnam War Memorial (by virtue of the engraved depiction of a soldier in an apparent jungle).... it is not clear whether this site honors Veterans of that War alone. A quote by John F. Kennedy could apply to any conflict..and of course, Kennedy was President only during the beginning of the Vietnam War. There is also a separate Vietnam War Memorial a few feet away.
The Memorial lists the names of a few dozen Veterans...presumably, citizens of East Chicago who gave their lives...presumably in different wars since it isn't specified...although the names seem to be organized by the branch of military service.
The quote by Kennedy reads:
"...WITH HISTORY THE FINAL JUDGE
OF OUR DEEDS, LET US GO FORTH TO
LEAD THE LAND WE LOVE, ASKING
HIS BLESSING AND HIS HELP. BUT
KNOWING THAT HERE ON EARTH. GOD'S
WORK MUST TRULY BE OUR OWN."
