Montfort Castle, also known as D'n Tomp or de Grauwert, is located just outside the core of Montfort . In fact, with Grauwert,the tower is particularly intended, but has become established as a name for the entire castle. Montfort Castle was built around the year 1260 , by order of Henry III of Gelre , who later was called Lord of Montfort. After the conversion, sieges, fires but also single-handed dismantling the castle gradually fell into ruins, though is still impressive. Since 1961 the castle is owned by the Montfort Castle Foundation. An octagonal brick built hunting lodge was established on a wall of debris around 1850, now restored in its original state.
The dimensions of the Montfort Castle are 50 to 50 meters. Besides the surface, the castle is one of the most advanced types Castle counted. The floor plan is not square, but polygon . The surrounding outer wall contains kinks, in terms of defending.There is also a tower (the Grauwert) with a very different form: The back of the tower is normal round, the front has a sharp point. This type of construction is also called " tour-a-bec 'bill bullied or ears. This tower is located right next to the original entrance to the castle and therefore intended to deflect projectiles . This is a unique example in the Benelux.
