In Boston's Back Bay section is the Church of the Covenant, at the corner of Newbury and Berkeley Streets. This church congregation is affiliated with both the United Church of Christ (Congregational) and Presbyterian USA churches, and has been meeting together since 1931.
According to the church web site, this congregation had its roots as the first Prebyterian Church established in Boston. In 1853, a committee of seven Scottish residents of Boston petitioned to have a minister sent to them through the Colonial Committee of the Free Church of Scotland. Knox Presbyterian Church held its first service on December 11, 1853. When the Prebyterian USA church was established in 1858, the congregation changed their name to First Presbyterian Church. The congregation changed from place to place to hold services for many years. In 1931, after a fire in the church that they were attending, the Presbyterian congregation started to jointly have services with the Congregational Church in Back Bay. The congregations joined in 1932 and changed the name to Church of the Covenant, which is what they go by today. The merged congregation still maintains affiliations with the two parent organizations. In the 1970s the congregation began to become more welcoming of Gay and Lesbian people and was one of the first congregations to join the "More Light" movement within the Presbyterian Church. They continue to day to champion issues important to this group.
The web site shows a lot of activity that is conducted by this congregation. The church is part of the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization. They run the Food Cupboard, a food pantry. They support Dulce Nombre de Jesus, a small village in Nicaragua. And, they house several non-profit organizations, including the Women's Lunch Place - a day shelter for women, AA, and several others.
They have services on Sunday at 10:30am. The sanctuary is available for tours on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11 am to 3 pm.
