The idea of a natural outdoor amphitheater was suggested as far back as 1922, but it wasn’t until 1931 that city commissioner Joe Nelson proposed that a platform stage be built for live open-air entertainment. The stage, which is still used for band concerts each summer Sunday evenings, was created with a Mediterranean flavor with a stucco backdrop, faux arched windows, and clay tile roof in the middle. The city remodeled the stage and backdrop in 1992. The sidewalk and stairs that lead down through the grassy amphitheater were added a few years later along with a new playground and picnic shelter.
