Rappahannock Station - Civil War Discovery Trail Sites on Waymarking.com

The Orange & Alexandria Railroad crossing at the Rappahannock River in Fauquier County, Virginia made Rappahannock Station a strategic point sought by both armies throughout the Civil War. On the evening of November 7, 1863, the Union army attacked and overran Confederate Gen. Jubal Early's division who were defending the position. More than 1600 men were captured. It was a humiliating loss for Lee's army and it would be the last time the Confederates would control the upper Rappahannock. Gen. R. E. Lee was forced to move the Army of Northern Virginia to Orange County south of the Rapidan River for the winter, while Gen. G. Meade's Army of the Potomac remained in the surrounding area for winter encampment.

A CWT marker is located at a gas station on Remington Rd. (Rt. 15/29) in Remington. The railroad is to the left and the crossing was to the front of the sign.
