Although Pieter Appelmans was not the only architect of this cathedral, he is the one depicted in the sculpture, with the layout of the cathedral on its knee. He was the one who designed the new towers, although only one was completed.
The other figures in the bronzen lifelike sculpture are some of the builders.
Others were Jacob van Tienen, Jan Appelmans (Pieter's father), Jan Tac, Everaert Spoorwater, Rombout II Keldermans, Herman de Waghemakere and Domien de Waghemakere.
The following inscription can be read, next to the sculpture:
"Ter vereeringhe van Pieter Appelmans ende van sine ambachtsghesellen die dese kercke hebben ghebouwt
maeckte Jef Lambeaux dit constwerck.
Het werd deser stede ter uprechtinghe ghesconcken van A. van den Nest, den scepene, van E. van Averbeke, den bouwmeestere, ghescickt ende onthult van onsen hooghedelen here den coninc Leopold III
desen 12sten van meye, in den jare onses Heren 1935, up den dach syner blyde incomste."
