The sculpture was placed as a memorial to the coal miners of the area. The sculpture was created by James L. Young and was erected July 30, 1961. The sculpture is of a miner with a headlamp and holding a pick in this two hands over is shoulder in position to strike against rock face in front of him. The miner was sculpted from coal byproducts.
The courthouse is open Monday-Friday 8:00 - 5:00 am.
