Leonard Harrison State Park - Wellsboro, Pennsylvania
Leonard Harrison State Park is located on the east rim of Pine Creek Gorge (Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon) and is also locted at the end of a state highway (Route 660). The original park facilities were constructed in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. (CCC) They built things like the overlook, restrooms, picnic facilites, parking lots, and potable water facilities. New restrooms were constructed in 1963, and later a Visitor Center/Concession (1968) and in 2005, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources spent $1.2 Million constructing two new flush restroom buildings at the overlook, converting the old rustic restrooms to ones with modern plumbing, as well as constructing a washhouse in the campground.
Park Facilities
Camping: A 30-site campground exists behind the ranger station. The campground comes complete with electric hookups, playground, washhouse and trailer disposal station
Picnicking: There is a picnic area next to the campground with about 100 picnic tables and well as the Schloder Picnic Pavilion.
Environmental Education & Interpretation: An environmental interpretor presents resource-oriented programs and interpretive walks April through October. Major topics and seasonal programs include: Watershed Education, astronomy, fall color, old-fashioned cider squeezing and summer campfire programs. Educational information is available at the visitor center or park office.
Visitor Center: The environmental interpretive center, at the Leonard Harrison main overlook entrance, is open during the summer season through the fall foliage season. A video and educational displays interpret the area and its wildlife. Call the park office for visitor center hours or to schedule an appointment for your group tour.
Hiking: There are two hiking trails in the park, they are as follows:
- Overlook Trail: An 0.6-mile trail that interprets Civilian Conservation Corps history in the park. (Moderately Difficult)
- Turkey Path:: This is a 4-Mile trail loop (2-Mile down the canyon floor and back) that is extremely difficult, however, the views are well worth it.
