This sculpture is on the beach front of the town of Songkhla, in Songkhla province, in southern Thailand. The sculpture brings to life what is a local legend and cautionary tale. Of a cat, a mouse and a dog (the last not in the sculpture), who, through greed, lost both their treasure and their lives.

The cat and mouse are depicted staring at each other, with the mouse holding a magic crystal (see below). Off the coast at this location are the two islands named in the memory of these two animals. The sculpture is superficially simple in design, but is eye catching. The artist has given character to both the cat and the mouse.

The legend, from the plaque (in gallery): A Chinese merchant captain buys the cat and dog as pets, however, the animals wish to return home. To do so they compel a mouse to steal from the merchant, a magic crystal, which prevents drowning. With the protection of this crystal they enter the water and swim back to Songkhla town. Regrettably, with their goal in sight, the baleful influence of greed rears its ugly, but influential head. The three animals squabble over the valuable crystal, which is lost at sea in the confusion, causing the cat and the mouse to drown. These two become islands—"Cat Island" and "Mouse Island". The dog struggles ashore, but exhausted, dies and becomes a hill—"Dog Hill" by name.

The statue was created by the successful Songkhla city mayorial candidate of 1999, Mr Choochuay, who, along with a number of associates, funded the sculpture.
