The statue of Carl von Linné, Swedish botanist, is near the National Library in Humlegården in Stockholm, Sweden. The statue was created by Johannes Kjellberg (1836–1885), and placed in the center of the library garden in 1885. The statue is surrounded with four figures that represented botany, medicine, chemistry and zoology, the diverse fields in which Linné had made scientific contributions.
Carl von Linné, aka Carl Linnaeus, was born in 1707. He was a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist who created the modern binomial nomenclature of genus and species that is universally used to characterize all living creatures. Thus, he is the father of modern taxonomy, and is also considered one of the fathers of modern ecology. Carl von Linné is a major figure in the history of science. He died in 1778.
