"Built circa 1837 with special taxes levied for that purpose by Alabama Legislature, 1836.

Replaced first court house, built circa 1825.

Somerville was incorporated, 1819, county seat 1819-1891.

Cotaco County created February 8, 1818, renamed Morgan County, June 14, 1821.

Erected 1967 by Alabama Historical Association. "

Added to the National Register of Historic Places 1972. The historic Morgan County Courthouse in Somerville, Alabama. Built in 1837, it is the oldest original courthouse in Alabama still standing. The Federal-style building served as a courthouse until the county seat for Morgan County moved from Somerville to Decatur in 1891. The building later served as Somerville Town Hall. Presently it is used for meetings, birthday parties, anniversaries and weddings. 24 Courthouse Square Somerville, AL USA 35670
