Although Hampstead was settled as early as 1640, it was not incorporated until 1749, being named for Hampstead, England.
Hampstead featuers many old, classic colonial homes as well as modern, upscale new housing developments. There are several inland waterways within its boundaries including Big Island Pond, Sunset Lake, and Angle Pond, making it a popular destination for summer camps, of which there are several here.
The town hall, with its bell towers are landmarks in the center of town.
