A dinosaur stands at roadside on Rt. 211 in Luray, Virginia alerting travelers to the Luray Zoo. The 18' fiberglass behemoth was created by
Mark Cline. Mark has built about 400 dinosaurs and this one was his first. He constructed it on location in 1985. Admittedly, Mark said when he created the dinosaur that he sacrificed authenticity in favor of making something big with "lots of teeth and lots of presence" to attract visitors, so the species is born out of imagination and artistic license.
The Luray Zoo is a rescue zoo with over 250 animals, reptiles, and birds. Unwanted pets, retired zoo animals and confiscated animals are welcome here. Many of the animals have been injured and rescued from the wild. Luray Zoo and its knowledgeable owners have been lauded for providing an excellent home and care.
