The station was opened in 1849 by the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). These days it is operated by Northern rail.
The station has 3 platforms, each with their own access.steps leading up to a footbridge, giving access to platforms 1 and 2. Platform 3 has a road level access point, near to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. The platforms only have simple shelters and the station is unmanned.
Most trains use platforms 1 or 3 with only a few using platform 2. East bound the destination is either Huddersfield or Leeds. Westbound the destination is to Manchester.
A nearby old goods yards is now the headquarters of the National Trust’s Marsden Moor Estate and a goods shed contains a public exhibition about the area and its transport history.
At this point the railway line is next to an earlier built canal and ½ mile to the west both the canal and rail line enter long tunnels underneath the nearby hills. The rail tunnel is 3 miles, 60 yards (4806 metres long). The station is a recognised stopping place to visit the canal tunnel, where boat trips can be taken part way into the tunnel and about 16 times a year there are trips all the way through the tunnel
