The rail trail runs 240 miles from Machens (near St. Charles) and ends in Clinton, in the right-of-way of the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (nicknamed "Katy" from the phonetic pronunciation of 'KT' in the railroad's abbreviated name, MKT). The trail is a Missouri state park and one of the longest Rails-to-Trails trails in the United States. Sections of this trail are part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and the American Discovery Trail.
