The building was originally a private house called Harlowes. The building was converted to a school at the beginning of the 19th century,, there being a reference to a school as early as 1806. The original central school building was augmented by extensions to each side in 1817. By 1846 the school joined the Church of England National School Society. The building remained in use as a school up until 1924 when it became the village hall.
