The city of Nakhon Si Thammarat is one of many stops to be found on the long southern train route of the Kingdom of Thailand. Capital of the province of the same name, Nakhon Si is a quiet place, far from the madding atmosphere of Bangkok. A province of rice farmers, rubber plantations, villages, and young western backpackers seeking the 'Real Thailand' on the provinces many pleasant beaches and rivers.

The station is located on the western, centre side of the city. It is a little larger than average, but follows the usual design. A front entrance, with waiting motorbike and tuk tuk drivers, a few old folk sitting in the shade, inside first ticket counters, then the train tracks with people waiting for their train. There is adequate English language signage.

Within a few minutes walk of the station you will find most of the hotels, restaurants, bars, tour companies and entertainment spots available in the city.

Train travel is an important feature of local transport. There are many 3rd class trains running through the station every day. 3rd class is free for Thais at certain times and dates, while a journey of ~200kms for you (the foreigner) will consume 5 hours of time, and cost you 37 baht (~$1) in a non-aircon carriage (it will have a fan, which will not work). Bring along your ear protectors (seriously), lots of loud noise, ~80db.
