Father Junipero Serra Freeway, I-280, travels through San Mateo County. This designated State Scenic Highway, which has received national aesthetic awards, traverses the valley created by the San Andreas Fault. The road parallels the San Andreas fault line, the Crystal Springs Reservoir and the Coastal Mountain Range the whole way.

The views are beautiful. Since Crystal Springs Reservoir is the water supply for the City of San Francisco, the hillsides that slope into the reservoir are protected and undeveloped. The hills are covered with lush forests. The contours of the hills produce interesting shadows throughout the day.

Interstate 280 is an alternate route, from the Bayshore Freeway - HiWay 101, to access San Francisco from San Jose and other southern peninsula areas. It is a divided highway with four lanes in each direction. This 22 mile long section stretches from the Santa Clara-San Mateo county line in the south up to San Bruno in the north, where CA HiWay 35 branches off.

Coordinates are at the southern end of the highway.
