What have the Romans ever done for us? Well, in addition to viticulture, sanitation, roads and so on, they gave us Tadcaster, or Calcaria as it was called in the Roman province of Britannia.
Calcaria derived from the Latin word for lime kilns. These were a feature of the area because of the geology of the area. Here, churches, bridges and so on are built from limestone.
Oddly, this pub only opens on Fridays and Saturdays. The pub is, sadly, brick-built!
