Shillingbury has a brass band, run by an old man called Saltie (Trevor Howard). At a parish council meeting the band comes in for some criticism and Saltie resigns. Unfortunately Peter Higgins (Robin Nedwell), a music teacher by profession and new to the village, is volunteered by his wife to step in as new band leader.
The band decides to work to rule, which has the bizarre effect of improving the sound of their music, to the extent that Peter enters the band for a competition. Eventually Peter and Sally Higgins persuade Saltie to rejoin the band as a player, which encourages the band. The band are happy playing music their own way, and at the band competition they decide to end their go slow and start ad-libbing again, causing them to be thrown out of the band competition.
Clips, taken from the film show the Higgins’ cottage, and scenes at the church, village pond, and village shop.
