The Townsend House was built in 1887. The house was built in a late Victorian style. The house was built for Thomas B. Townsend who was a early business leader in Montrose. Mr. Townsend first came to Montrose around 1880 and established a successful hardware business. In 1888 he founded the Montrose County Bank which the next year became the First National Bank which he served as president until his death in 1929. He was known as great promoter of business and development in Montrose.
