This bridge looks big enough to be a road bridge. However it simply carries a water pipe from a reservoir to supply the City of Bradford.

Victorian engineers tended to do things on a grand scale and turned this bridge into a crenulated masterpiece. The mock defence turrets make it look older than it really is.

The bridge is on the Bolton Abbey estate, which belongs to Lord Devonshire. Although a private estate there are many public access footpaths alongside the River Wharfe. This bridge therefore comes in useful for walkers to get from one side of the river to the other.

The bridge has 3 large arches across the river, and on the Southern bank a small arch so that walkers can pass underneath it whilst walking along the river. The arch on North bank looks wider than necessary, but this is to deal with the times when river is in flood.

The estate has 3 pay car parks that cost 6 pounds for the a day (as at 2011). The parking ticket is valid in 3 different car parks around the estate all day long. On Sundays a 4th car park is also open at the far end of the estate.

The nearest car park to this bridge is The Strid car park, or Barden Field on a Sunday. There is also limited free parking near Barden Field and Barden Bridge.
