Col. Charles A. Lindbergh was the first person to fly nonstop from New York to Paris. Lindbergh's aircraft, The Spirit of St. Louis, was flown without a radio and only minimal navigational equipment. On August 27, 1927,Lindbergh took off from Fargo ND to Sioux Falls. En route he dropped fly over messages while circling Aberdeen, Redfield, Huron and Mitchell. He landed at Sioux Falls at 12 noon as scheduled. A crowd of 30,000 was on hand to watch the sleek silvery plane come to a stop. Lindbergh concluded by giving a brief address to the people.
