The district consists of three buildings in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, designed by the Buffalo, New York firm of Marling and Burdett in 1889 for Andrew A. Buell, a successful lumber merchant. The name comes from the locally quarried reddish-purple rock officially known as Monkton Quartzite.

Redstone Hall was the residence which the Buell family occupied until 1921, when the 66-acre estate was sold to the University of Vermont. The University converted the house and stable (now Robinson Hall) into women's dormitories.

Redstone Lodge, built as a gardener's cottage, now serves as a residence for the University.
