The Carnation Revolution, a left-leaning military coup, began on 25 April 1974, in Lisbon, Portugal. It was coupled with an unanticipated and extensive campaign of civil resistance. These events effectively changed the Portuguese regime from an authoritarian dictatorship into a democracy.
This fountain in Parque Eduardo VII (Edward VII Park)- was constructed from ruins created during this 1974 revolution. It represents the emerging of democracy in Portugal. From this fountain there are stunning views all the way down to the Tagus River.
