John R Jackson selected this spot for a home in 1844. It became a famous stopping place for pioneer travelers over the Oregon Trail.

When John built a small cabin here in 1845 he became on of the first american settlers north of the Columbia River.
In 1848 he married Matilda and built this home for their family complete with cedar floors and glass windows. The luxurious home included a spinning wheel, circular grindstone, clothes wringer and sewing machine.
The Highlands as John called his home entertained many people, including Ulysses Grant, Goveror Stevens and others. It even was used as a courthouse.
