A small green-space near the Madrid welcome sign houses a wonderful display of the mining history of this community. For the first half of the 20th Century, coal mining was a major industry in this area introducing Italians and Croatian immigrants to the originally Swedish town. The historical display includes a life sized wood carved statue of a coal miner with tracks, wagon, and a map of the local coal mines. The base of the statue includes the initials AJ ’98. The display can be seen on the west side of Hwy. 17.
