The city of Yala is just about as far south as one can go and still be in Thailand. It lies ~1000kms and 15 hours from Bangkok. The station for this small city is on the northern side of the town, easily spotted as the train line cuts across the main road into the town. From the look of the station it is not a busy stopping point. There is a certain lack of major tourist sites, either in the city or province, and the ongoing security concerns (see below).
Of note, this station differed markedly from the other Thai stations I have seen. Rather than a small station building with ticket counters and associated impedimenta, the building for this station is a large seemingly near-empty building. There were no counters or even an indication that the building was the train station, apart from the signs in front. The were station signs outside on the track.
I suspect that, as there are few outside visitors, and that Thais receive free or discounted travel on these trains, there is no need for a ticket counter in the station building. Tickets would be paid (or not) on the train as folk travel through the province.
Outside the station there are the usual bevy of tuk tuk and motor 'cyc' taxi drivers, ready and willing to convey you around the town, or anywhere else you may wish to go. The area outside the station is also an informal, local bus station. Buses to the neighbouring province of Pattani, and buses to the small towns and villages of the province depart from here.
ADVISORY: For the last few years and decades there has been an ongoing insurgency in the Muslim populated provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat (the 'deep south' of Thailand). An average of 600 people (out of a pop. of 1.6 million) have been killed per year between 2004-9. The Australian government strongly urges its citizens not to visit these provinces: "do not travel". Having said all of this there is no blood on the streets, and life goes on normally for the vast majority of people. You have been advised.
