The crew of the oyster schooner, Robert Bruce" settled here in December 1851 after the schooner burned. They built cabins and filed land claims calling the village Bruceville. In 1854 it was changed to Bruceport. This is the site of a lively oyster industy from 1851 to 1880. With enormous quanties of oysters being gathered by the Indians and sent to San Francisco on schooners.
