Engraved on this rock is the history behind the development of the Delicious Apple. The text is as follows:
“To commemorate the discovery in Madison County, Iowa of a variety of apple by Jesse Hiatt A.D. 1872 and called by him the Hawkeye sole right to propagate acquired by C.M. Stark A.D. 1894 and by him renamed, introduced and disseminated throughout the apple world as The Delicious Apple.
Erected A.D. 1922 Iowa State Horticultural Society, Madison County Historical Society, Historical Department of Iowa.”
