The Bolton Abbey estate is privately owned by the Duke of Devonshire. There are many acres of land and footpaths openly access to the public.
The river Wharfe flows through the estate and is one of the best rivers in the UK for fly fishing enthusiasts. This has obviously inspired the design of this weather vane,
The fish is about to be landed into the net. The vane is on an old lodge building next to the Cavendish Pavillion Cafe and is about 20 metres from the river.
If you’re interested in the fishing the day licences can be purchased from the estate office.
Brown Trout can be caught from March to September and Grayling from June to February.
Access to the estate lands is free but there is very limited parking on the roads. The estate has 3 pay car parks that cost 6 pounds for the a day (as at 2011). The parking ticket is valid in 3 different car parks around the estate all day long. On Sundays a 4th car park is also open at the far end of the estate.
The best car park to see this vane is the Sandolme Car Park
