Ushuaia is the capital city of Tierra del Fuego Province, Argentina and is located in a wide bay on the southern coast of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, bounded on the north by the Martial mountain range and on the south by the Beagle Channel. It has an area of 9,390 km2.
It is commonly regarded as the southernmost city in the world. Puerto Williams, a Chilean port located on Isla Navarino, on the southern shore of the Beagle Channel. has a population of over 2,000 people, mainly naval personnel (total military personnel 1,700), and many of the houses in Puerto Williams belong to the Chilean Navy. Puerto Williams is sometimes considered the southernmost city in the world by Chilean media and it promotes this slogan in its tourism campaigns. An argument against Puerto Williams's use of this slogan is the fact that Chile's Department of Statistics classifies a city as any urban entity which has more than 5,000 permanent residents.
Ushuaia has a population of approximately 64,000 people and ranks as the 97th biggest city in Argentina.
