The Nag's Head is much abused and it is not unknown for sign writers to portray an old woman on the sign.

However, here we have a horses head. A nag was a pony or small horse let out for hire. It was not unusual then, for The Nag's Head to appear in places like tis one, on a major route.

This one stands on the A5 or Watling Street a major route that has joined the capital to the major towns and cities of the midlands for centuries.
